Hey! This post is really old. You should take it with a grain of salt.
So, apparently 2009 is almost over, as in, has but 12 hours left to live. I shall miss it. It was a good year. I finished Year 11, for one thing. And went to Reunion island (there's an accent over the e, but I can't get Firefox to do it). Um. That's about it really. Looking back, Reunion (there's an accent- never mind.) sticks out of the year like... something really big sticking out of something otherwise insignificant. Like, if you put Mount Everest in the middle of the Nullarbor. Or something. I've seriously never done anything that interesting in my life, even if, or maybe because, I didn't drink like a fish and smoke like a chimney while I was over there just because I could. It was just awesome.
Moving on from mindless gushing over a certain island with an accent over the e, 2009 also marks the end of a decade. A decade which, when I think about it, I've spent the largest part of my life living in. I finished primary school, and got most of the way through high school, and gone from being 6-almost-7 to being 16-almost-17, and started using the internet (actually, that probably happened around the end of 2005 when I got my own computer, which I still have by the way, and it's funny because most of the people in the same immediate age group also still have theirs from when they were 12-13, and they're all starting to creak a little with age... I'm glad humans last longer than computers, at any rate. Tangent over). I've also... Oh jeesh, I don't know. How am I supposed to remember and review and reminisce about every single significant event that happened between an arbitrary point in the Earth's orbit ten revolutions ago and the same arbitrary point now? For that matter, how am I supposed to remember everything that happened this year? It all just seems to blur a bit, and then a lot, and then sort of disappear into smeary blurred memories... I guess that gets worse as you get older.
Anyway.
If I was going to sum up the rest of the world's decade, instead of just mine, in 3 dot points, in terms of big things, this is what they'd be:
Terrorism (Yeah, September 11 was in 2001, almost 10 years ago. You remember it like it was yesterday, and doesn't that make you feel old), followed by unnecessary war, draconian security at airports and CCTV cameras everywhere.
Global Warming. Kyoto was held in '97, and came into force in 2005, and then Al Gore went around telling everyone about it, and Kevin Rudd signed and ratified Kyoto, and then Emissions trading scheme going nowhere, and Copenhagen collapsing into a bitch-fest... So maybe it was less about actual global warming, and more "A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." (have I mentioned how awesome Macbeth is?)
Uhm... The internet, and associated hardware and hype. Including, but not limited to, Google, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, iPhones, iPods, iEverythings, 3 versions of Windows, 2 versions of each of the major consoles (Yeah XP and the xbox came out in 2001 too, nearly a decade ago... now that does make you feel old.). Oh, and mah blog. That happened too. So. That's it. 2009, the 2000s, my take, my life, etc. etc. etc. and there are probably thousands more just like it floating around on the internets already, because that's what people feel compelled to do at the end of the decade. Stay tuned, then, for the veritable torrent of new year's resolution posts coming in tomorrow...
...and I'll see you in Twenty-Ten.
Ugh. That was so cheesy.
Bye!
